Letter to my Hero

Dear Hero,
Well it has been over a week. A week since I hugged you, a week since I saw your face. A week since I conned you into changing a diaper. I feel like we did not get an official good-bye. Things got crazy and I did not get my traditional good-bye. I guess it gives me something to look forward to.
This evening I went grocery shopping at wal-mart (yucko). I can now say I officially started working on my first care package to send you. Now if only I can get an addy to send you things.
When we were driving to Wal-mart Grace saw cows standing up and told me that she missed you because the cows are standing and that means it is a good fishing day. Then walking through Wal-mart she pointed out something else that makes her miss you. I like when she talks about you. I try really hard to keep communication open and going.
Well I guess I better get in bed. Mornings come early. I love you babe!

This child amazes me and keeps me entertained. Every day it is something different. I love this child. I love how she tries things that she is too small to do. I love that she loves with all of her heart. I even love how spunky she has become.

Wordless Wednesday

This is what happens when it is not her turn to hold the baby. I love how much she loves him.

A Bad Dream

A bad dream, it is 5am and I am awake because I had a bad dream. I slept well last night. But I dreamed…. Last night I dreamed that my hero and I were away by ourselves only we were in our home town. I dreamed I woke up one morning and he was not there. At first I thought he had gone to the store but his truck was there. Then I went on about my morning thinking I must be forgetting something. He could not be found. I called his mom and his friends. No one had heard from him. He had just disappeared.
In my dream everyone around me is going on with their day because that is what people do but in my dream I am panicked because my hero has disappeared and it is not like him. My cell phone broke right in half in the dream but could be held together to use. It broke right down the middle, so weird.
I dreamed I was trying to call staff duty to report him missing but my phone was not working and no one else’s phone was working right.
The last part of the dream was me getting into his truck to drive to by a new phone. I awake and laid there praying for my husband. Praying that I will not allow fear to consume me. Reminding myself that this was only a dream. And then role play in my head what would happen if he really was gone. I hate nights like this. They do not come often. But honestly they come. So I got out of bed, walked into the living room with the lights off and checked the driveway for government vehicles. I know they do not make notifications this early (I have done the training).
I use to (many deployments ago) would not turn on my lights until I checked the drive way. But honestly I do not do that anymore. I am stronger now, my Faith is stronger.
I want to be honest on my blog. I have a friend who called me the day my hero deployed and was a little shocked that I was not a total mess. I am really doing okay. But when things are bad I want you to know. I want you to understand really what it is like to have a soldier who is deployed.
God is good and right this minute I have no fear. My husband does not do a scary job in case you were wondering. We actually kind of laugh because he really has more of a desk job now.

I have been deheaded

I wonder what I did that was so wrong. Some how for the second time the mommy got beheaded. I know it is nothing a little super glue can't fix. But seriously no one has beheaded the daddy or the kids.

Letter to my Hero

Dear Hero,
Before I forget, did you take the speaker for my laptop? I cannot find it anywhere. We made it through our first Sunday at church. I have to say honestly it was not bad. Normally going alone is hard but for whatever reason it did not seem so hard. Maybe because I was cooking or your favorite song was not being played. Or maybe I should give credit and say that Christ is giving me more strength then I could ever have on my own.
The kids did well at church. Michael helped Mrs. Kathy. There were not a lot of people there. I mean seriously I bet our numbers were down by half. After church we went to Wal-mart in the rain which was a B-I-G mistake. I got what I needed and got back in the car. Well really I wanted a new dog bowl but they did not have what we are looking for. I need to go to a pet store to find one that is up off the ground. Do you remember the dog bowl that looks like a toilet we saw, they have them on Amazon. I found another one for $40 that looks like it would work. It is tall and has storage and looks like a kitchen cabinet. So not quite as obvious. Although I saw one you would like on pinterest. They basically cut a hole in one of our kitchen chairs and set the bowl in it. That would be an awesome idea if we could set them in the corner somewhere and have a way of using them as chairs.
Okay I need to make you laugh. The other day when Darcy got here I could not find Kerri’s shoes. I had convinced myself that she did not bring shoes that day. Tonight I was putting James in bed and found one of the shoes behind his head board. Then I found her other shoe inside his sheets. I have no clue how they got there. But I am glad I found them.
Oh yeah I guess I should tell you that this dog has not slept with me since you left. She sleeps on your side of the bed on the floor but refuses to sleep in the bed. So I wonder does she feel like she does not need to protect me from you or does she not like me enough to sleep with me?
I love ya babe, I miss you. I miss you most when everyone goes to bed. The house is quiet, too quiet and I have to face the fact that you are really not hear another day.
I love ya,
Note to readers: I feel like I am lying to you by not being honest and saying these notes are not to date. Due to OPSEC I will always post what I write after the event so that I am not explaining how long he will be gone.

hotdogs and spaghetti OOH

Everyone loves Pinterest. Some people even know how to say "Pinterest", I am not one of those people. I love it because I am determined to actually use some of my ideas. When I saw this it was for Halloween but I thought it would be fun for every day. The kids loved it. I loved it because one package of hotdogs fed all seven kids and spaghetti is cheap. I added some carrot sticks and we were done.

We had a family meeting in the backyard the other day. Afterwards Grace took James for a walk. I asked her what they talked about and she said nothing we just walked quietly.
While watching the super bowl they decided to snuggle up again. She could not stop talking. Jason said "Grace, can you be quiet, I am watching the game". Cracked me up! We do not normally watch sports so where he picked this up is anyones guess.

Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… it has been crazy and crazy and crazier busy.
In our homeschool this week…it has honestly been hard to ask my kids to do school when the weather is in the 70’s. I feel like we need to be outside playing and running and jumping and screaming.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…I am determined to do devotions every morning with my kids. It brings us all together and lets us start the day out as a family and go over the goals of the day.
I am inspired by…my daughter. My girls are in a running group. They are in 2 different groups. The other day Faith ran past Hope. Noticed she was not running and left her friends to go back and run with and encourage her sister.
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…we have no plans to travel. Hopefully dad will get internet and be able to skype soon. We miss him like crazy and need to see his face.
My favorite thing this week was…setting in the sunshine. I normally do not like the sun and definitely not the heat. But for some reason I crave the sun and the heat on my face. It wakes me up and calms me down and energizes me.
What’s working/not working for us…not having dad home is not working for us. Keeping up with our chore chart is working for us. As long as I remember to stick to it.
Questions/thoughts I have…I know this is not really homeschool related but I need a new camera to keep in my purse. Do you have a recommendation? I have a nice Nikon but need something to carry with me. Something the kids can use too.
Things I’m working on…My friend’s husband is coming home next week and I have fleece to make him a blanket and I would really love to get it made before he gets home.
I’m reading…I just read He Heard Hannah, I will tell you more about it on March 8th. All I can say is WOW and it is so inspiring.
I’m cooking…oh my word I cannot stop cooking. Pinterest is killing me with all the fun things. I made eggs in a muffin pan. They turned out amazing.
I’m grateful for…friends who help me with the kids, friends who listen when I need help.
I’m praying for…my hero, he recently found out he has asthma and any time he is in cold he sounds like he has ran a marathon for the first time. It is scary to hear him breath. Hard to get away from the cold in Afghanistan
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

5 Question Friday

1. What's your favorite way to spend down time (alone or with a significant other)? Alone would be reading a book while eating something yummy in a quiet place or laying in my bed. With my spouse, I love doing things with him like going to a amusement parks or museums. We act like teenagers again. It is a wonderful feeling.

2. Are you the kind of person that wants things more as soon as you know you can't have it? Oh yeah, although I have self control to not go over board and talk about it constantly.

3. If you were given $1000 to spend on yourself, what would you buy? That is so hard. I want a new camera, maybe fabric for sewing. No really, I know now. I would pay for someone to come in and clean my house and my carpets.

4. Do you ever go out to eat by yourself? All the time! If my kids are not with me then I always stop to eat. I love it. I order what I want and enjoy it. I do not go into the restaurant and eat alone.

5. What company would you want to do a blog review for? This is really hard. But right now I would say a good camera would be amazing, as long as they taught me how to use it. Or what about a Kelly Moore bag to go with my camera. Oh man those bags are awesome. Let me think any kitchen appliance would be amazing too. So many things, so many ideas. It would take a book to list everything I would love to try out.

Letter to my Hero

Dear Hero
Woo, what a wonderful day. What a busy day, what a crazy day. I got everyone up early and took Michael to the Chapel to work. I came home and got everyone dressed and did school with Hope while Faith did school.
Then we headed back to post to pick up Michael and here is where it gets totally crazy. We picked up Michael and headed to Cingular (okay AT&T) to turn in your orders. The wonderful employee that we like was there. She called the company suspend you account and this is where things go crazy. She has done this a million times. AT&T said that they looked on the DOD website and you are not deployed you are in basic training. She explained over and over that she has met you and you have been in 19 years and are most definitely not in basic. We were there over an hour. They did not even want a copy of the orders because they knew they were right. She finally faxed them the orders and hopefully got it straight. I am calling the company today to pitch a major fit.
After that we went to Sam’s for lunch. Seriously where else can you feed seven kids for $12? Can you believe I left only spending $45? I needed some spices and 5 milks.
Then we ran Kerri back on post to her mom. Then I took Jason in for his urine test. Oh my word I wish I had a video camera watching us. I explained to Jason that he was going to Pee in a cup and he went nuts with excitement. When I finally had him setting quietly the lab tech called him up and said “do you need to pee, can you pee in a cup for me, and will you please pee in a cup for me”. He went nuts again jumping up and down saying “I get to pee in a cup; I am going to pee in a cup”. Cracked me up and everyone in the office thought it was funny. He did fine.
Then we rushed home for Michael to change for scouts and headed to scouts.
While he was at scouts I took the three youngest to McDonald’s. I even splurged and bought happy meals. Would you believe they hardly ate there food. Then we went back to scouts. The meeting did not end until 8:45. Luckily there were lots of scouts running around to help. Let’s just say the kids had a great time.
We finally came home about 9:15 and crashed. Tomorrow will be crazy but in a much quieter way.

Update to AT&T

I wanted to update. I wrote to AT&T about my displeasure on facebook. I was quickly asked to call or e-mail a specific person. I e-mailed her exactly what I wrote on my blog. Within an hour she called me. Her name was Jennifer (manager of something). She was very honest in the misunderstanding and where it happened and taking full responsibility. She took care of the situation quickly. She even gave me a direct number to get a hold of her. I am very impressed with the way this was handled.
Again I will say my in store experience was amazing and now dealing with her today was amazing.
I try to remind myself that if someone is not giving good customer service go to the next person. In this case I had to deal with one person who was not properly trained/new to the job. But after all is said and done I am very pleased with the way they followed up.

The boy is strong

My hero went away recently for a month. My girls thought they could carry in his bags. They couldn't but it was fun watching them try. So Michael thought it would be fun to tease them because he just knew he could. I did not think he could so what did I do? I made a crazy challange. I said if you can carry his bag to the closest stop sign and back then you can have the day off school. He had no clue we were having a school free day anyways. The girls cheered him on the entire time. He walked in looking at us like we were nuts for questioning his ability. I guess I will not be trying that one again.

AT&T-ouch this hurts

Dear Cingular,
After 12 years of amazing customer service you have not only let me down but saddened me to the point of tears.
Let me explain. Several months ago my hero called and said he would like information on suspending his account when he deploys. Something we have never done in previous deployments. You were so kind and assured him nothing changes (except our bill). He would be able to keep his number and his current plan and features.
Yesterday I walked into our local store. I asked for the wonderful OLGA, the lady who has always treated us wonderfully and respectfully and has worked with your company for 12 years. I hand her my hero’s orders and she makes the phone call to your company. The same thing she has done a million times. This is a military community and there must have been 25 soldiers walk into the store while I was there.
Here is where the problem happened. She called to say she needed to suspend the account. She was told that they cannot suspend his account because he is not deployed he is in basic training. Let’s think about this, he has had service with a military discount for 12 years. I do not know of any basic training that is 12 years long. Olga offered to fax in a copy of the orders and was told over and over that it was not necessary because the DOD website says my hero is in basic training. She assured him that she had met my hero many times and he was not in basic. That he has been in the Army for 19 years. The man refused to accept anything she said. She asked to speak to his supervisor and was put on hold for no less than 20 minutes. Finally the employee came back on and gave her a fax number. An incorrect fax number. I waited another 10 minutes while she got that figured out and faxed in.
I called AT&T this afternoon to verify his account had been suspended. I was told:
a. That it was in problem resolution and they had until February 28th to decide if they would accept his orders. NO, I DID NOT LIE TO YOU, this is what outrages me, and I feel like you are calling me a liar when I can prove otherwise. Remember I have been a customer for twelve years.
b. That although we were told months ago by the company and again yesterday in the store that he would NOT lose his roll over minutes or any current plan, we would now lose his rollover minutes. When he comes home he can have the same data package and phone number. But would lose any texting rates and anything else like roll over.
c. You also told me that you would call the store and educate them on what they are doing wrong. That the policy changed last year and they must not know the current information. That you sent my hero an e-mail a month ago explaining what he would lose. That you no longer suspend accounts, you close them.
d. So I called my local store back. I was again told that all that was done was his number is suspended (or cancelled if you want to be technical) and I am now the primary number. That WE have not lost anything.

I cannot believe the amount of run around. I am now told I have to wait to find out if you will accept his orders and you have until the 29th to decide if you are going to believe his government orders or not. I would like you to tell me why I should keep a service who does not know the regulations as a company.
I am sorry but I do not understand how a company that deals with soldiers on a daily basis cannot get their act together. My hero is not setting on a beach somewhere; he is not here reading good night stories with his children. He is fighting for your freedom. Your freedom to treat him like trash, to tell him that his military orders are not worth the paper they are written on. Please help me understand this. If I calculated correctly I paid you over 15 THOUSAND dollars in the last 12 years. I am asking you to comp us maybe $200 and I get this amount of run around. How is this okay?

Flat daddy

Have you heard of flatdaddy. I saw one on another blog and knew instantly that we needed one of these for my house. Currently he stays on our mantle. He is available to go to church with us or any place else. He is with us for morning devotions. Faith says that his eyes follow her.
I can not think enough for this wonderful gift.

Waffle maker

When we make waffles we make a ton and freeze them. I love making waffles but I H-A-T-E cleaning the waffle maker. So when I have it out I really use it. I saw that you could make cinnamon rolls on the waffle maker and guess what? It works! I also mixed up cake batter and cooked it on the waffle maker. So much fun and I only had to clean the stinking waffle maker one time.

Letter to my Hero

Dear Hero,
I love you and I miss you and I cannot believe we are doing this again. I think I have lied to myself for the last several months. Lindsie called me the day you left and asked how I was. She was surprised I sounded so well. I was honest and said I try to pretend it is not happening.
It is harder to do now. Jason was behind the chair this afternoon and I heard him say I miss daddy. It is like for whatever reason he realizes this is for a long time. He told me you needed to come back and get pizza with dipping sauce. He has loved on me all day.
We have had a good week. I think everyone but me is on the mend. I have no clue why you and I cannot get rid of this throat thing.
Abby is doing okay, although she did take a bowl of cereal from the baby this morning. Today was a quiet day. I cleaned up the kitchen this morning. Made cupcakes for church, took a nap, well laid down to nap. Everyone was fed and bathed by 5pm. I put pork chops and potatoes in the crockpot. I have got to make sure I am cooking daily.
I am going to run to the pet store tomorrow and pick up a new dog bowl for the dog. I love you so much, have I said that. I can tell this deployment is still new because I keep leaving my phone laying around.
I talked to your mom today, she was folding laundry. She sounded like she was doing better.
I cannot wait to start mailing things to you. If I keep these girl scout cookies in the house another day I know I will eat them.
I love ya babe and cannot wait to hear from you again.

The Mountain Dew Song

What is so funny about this I am known for my addiction. Normally I limit myself to one a day, two if it is a long day. But for the last week I have not felt well and have had no less than four a day.

Do you have a product you love? I love scentsy. I love everything about it. I babysit for a lady who sells Scentsy. I am sure that has something to do with my obsession. For Christmas she gave me a new burner. I was in love. I knew it would hold a picture. I have to be honest and say that when I turned it on and saw the light behind the picture I was over the moon with excitement. This has to be my favorite one of the million (okay 7) that I have.
My question is what is your favorite bar and do you combine scents?

Feeling Beachie

1. Sometimes I _give too much advice and act like I know more than I do___
2. I _did not enjoy __ high school
3. Deciding what to _cook for church fellowship__ before I _am at the store_________________ is such a pain sometimes because I am on a budget and do not know what will be on sale
4. _Lunch time________________is my favorite__time of day._______________

5 Question Friday

1. What do you do when you are really upset to calm yourself down? Walk outside and set on my porch and relax, the kids know they are NOT allowed to come out until I think so. I also love to turn up the praise and worship music and sing like no one is listening.

2. Do you go all out for V-day or is it just another day? I want to go all out. Well really I want someone to go all out for me. I did score bonus points this year because I got my husband a coin holder. He has wanted one for years.

3. Are you more or less productive when Hubs is away? More productive, my hero is deployed right now so it is time to step up and get things done.

4. What is your favorite time of day and why? Lunch time is our definitely our favorite, I did not even have to think about it. I love it because most days I use this time to get things done. The kids hang out at the table eating and talking and giggling. No matter how bad our day has gone they take lunch time to have fun.

5. What is your go to karaoke song? Put a lime in the coconut and drink it all up or Lord, I lift your name on high. I know 2 totally different songs.

Good Deeds Great Needs

Good Deeds. Great Needs. | #GoodDeedsMovie
I do not know about you but I really enjoy all things Tyler Perry. I recently heard about his new movie called Good Deeds. I love how this movie is changing people and all the wonderful things that will come from it.
I have already spoken to you about If you did not hear about please feel free to read what I wrote here. What I did not realize earlier is that this program is going to help Covenant House. A house that helps homeless children.
How would you help someone? Would it be giving to the homeless person on the street corner? Would it be helping that mom you see struggling to buy groceries at the store? Would it be to give someone a ride home from work that normally walks? There are so many ways to help even when we feel like we do not have the finances to do so. I have already told you about I encourage you to look into both of these programs. It is a great time of a year to help. No holidays are close by. It is time for my family to take the time to see how we can help one another and help others.

Unused gift cards

(google image)
Do you have unused gift cards lying around? Did you receive a gift card and have no desire to use it? Do you want to help others but really do not have the finances to do it? I have the solution for you.
I was contacted recently about to help spread the word of this amazing program.
This is such a neat idea. Four friends wanted to collect gift cards to help people in need. They walked into a gathering and asked, 8 people if they had unused gift cards and they walked out with $50 worth of gift cards.
I am so excited to help out. I read on their site that 10-15% of gift cards are unused. It makes perfect sense to me considering I have a separate wallet for gift cards.
Turning in your gift cards is easy. Simply place them in an envelope and mail them to:
Gift Card Giver
PO Box 17920
Atlanta, GA 30316

What a neat idea. I encourage you to spread the word of this program. How hard would it be to walk into a mommy group and collect gift cards? For me it would help me not have guilt because I did not use all of the gift cards.

5 Question Friday

1. How often do you shave your legs in the winter? Let’s just say in 9 hours I will pull out of my driveway with my hero for a romantic getaway. My main concern is how do I get the forest off my legs. Having blonde hair makes it easier to forget about.

2. Valentine's Day cards for your spouse: funny or romantic? Romantic and maybe a funny one just for the fun of it.

3. What are you most looking forward to about spring? I love that I can open windows and air out the house. I can put the kids in the back yard for hours with no fear of needing sunblock. That I can make plans for the summer. That we are one season closer to my hero coming home.

4. What's your favorite way to pamper yourself? Getting a pedi and manicure. It is weird because I cannot stand them cutting my nails or filing and I look like they are torturing me. But then they massage my legs and AWWWWWWWWWWW! Then I walk out with what looks like pretty fingernails and AWWWWWWWWWWW!

5. Does your tax return go into savings or do you spend it instantly? Normally, we have it spent before we file it. This year we are just putting it in savings. I know I need to save $4,000 for school but other than that we do not have plans. Well my hero does not have plans. I am begging for 6 new dressers for the kids. We have said the last 2 years next year. We have those dressers that do not close easily, that fall out. That drive me batty. The problem is since we move often I want 6 real wood, no particle board dressers.

This is hard

This is hard. We have been through seven other deployments but this is still hard. My children are feeling it. Even the little girl I keep is feeling it. One day this week out of the blue she said “I miss my daddy, I miss your daddy, and I miss my daddy”. She spoke in a mean voice that is not normal. It brought me to tears. Her dad is a soldier.
Jason asks each morning if daddy is home. Rob has been gone a month and is only home shortly before leaving again. So every morning he ask if Dad is gone or at work? He needs to know what to expect.
The last several nights Grace has climbed into my bed at night and not slept soundly. This morning Grace woke up after Rob left for PT and said “where is daddy”. As soon as I said he went to work and would be home later she fell soundly asleep. It was as if she as soon as she knew today is not the day she could sleep again.
This is hard. I want to take away their pain. I want them to understand it. So often people will say to me that it must be hard to deal with six kids while he is away. I always smile and make some nice comment. Honestly, the kids are what keep me going. They are amazing. The smiles, the questions, the hugs, that is what keeps me going.
But in my brain I think I wish someone noticed the kids. I wish there was a way of someone to read their mind. How they feel when there is an event and dad is not there. This summer our boat will set untouched. No long trips to the lake. Noone, to fix toys as they break. No one to complain to about mom not letting them do something. Instead they will have skype phone calls and lots of mail being sent. A countdown of days. They will have fear of rather their dad will come home. They will have boyscout camp outs without dad, movie nights without dad, lonely Saturday mornings without dad to wrestle with. They will look at his truck and remind me that in dad’s truck they can act silly and make weird noises with their body.
For today I will choose to enjoy the day. I will not think about the days to come but will think of the years to come. About the camp outs next year. About the fishing trips next year. I will think about our reunion, the wonderful hugs that come that first day. I will focus on making sure that we have welcome home signs. I will focus on summer plans that the kids and I can do without dad. I will focus on care packages. I will focus on extra hugs for the kids. I will focus on the blessings in my life and the blessings the Army has brought to our life.
